One of the reason behind Instagram's success would be a psychology reason. People like it when they got engagement such as likes and comments on Instagram. For celebrities, this might be a overlooked, but for those who consider themselves as average social creatures like some of us, it means a lot. in 2018, Guardian.com shows us a very well written explanation in its article that interactions on social media gave us dopamine hit, a hormone that gives us a surge of reinforcing pleasure when achieving them.
No wonder we are hooked on social media. Secretly, we enjoy the feels given by what is inside our phone. This would explain why we're so happy when we get new followers, especially those who you have been expecting. Organic followers.
What are organic followers? On Instagram, there are two different kind of followers. Organic means real people that follows you with real intention. Maybe because they are interested with your feeds, your outfits, or the products that you try to sell. They don't mind seeing your post popping up on their phone, meaning you can reach them easier in more frequency.
Next we have the inorganic. I would say those followers are boosted. With certain kind of apps you can get more followers, yet they are inactive or secretly have secret agenda. It might be a store account that has been programmed to follow certain category of account, or they follow you so they could post spam comments whenever you post photos.
If I ask you, which one do you like more? Your answer might be the organic one. It tells us better analytics and we can make better decisions out of our organic followers. But how do we get them? I will share 5 practical ways we can get them
1. Engage with them 🤝
Maintaining an Instagram account means you have a good engagement tools. If you're running business, you should browse daily on your early days and interacts with other people that is within your segment.
2. Use relevant hashtag #️⃣
Let's say you own a coffee shop, what you can do is use hashtag and get in contact with relevant hashtag. There, you will see people with the same interest and you can start liking their photos, and appreciate their pictures. Talk with them and see the result by yourself ! These two ways are your arsenals.
3. Provide Information 📜
Following someone is the action that you desired from others. We need to support your prospective followers to do so. People are full of curiosity, you should assist them by providing necessary information such as tagging the place you're at, engaging copy writing and other things that facilitate them to follow you. Giving them special discount after certain interaction might be good if you're running a business. Building your feeds on certain hobbies that you enjoy is good to relate with other people as part of your segment !
4. Get your followers involved 👲🏻👳🏻🧒🏻👧🏻
Whether it's an Instagram post or an Instastory, you can tag your followers that you interact with and see most likely, they will repost them on their feeds. Pretty cool right? It creates ripple effect, they got their dopamine and you get extra word of mouth from them. Another way you can do it is by using User Generated Content. When they mention you on their post. Save it for later and repost their work on your account. Make sure you give them all the credit they deserve. Seeing one of your friends getting a shout out will form a good image for you.
5. Referral Links🔗
Make sure your social media is linked from one platform to another. If you have a website, make sure your Instagram account is linked there. If you own a facebook page, make sure you put your website address and Instagram account there, and so on. This way, it helps people to locate you because you're everywhere! If you own a business, this part is essential and would help you in creating more traffic.
In conclusion, applying easy steps above could help you to gain more followers. But remember, social media is about engaging, which is part of relationship that you try to build with certain audience. Creating good content will always help you to put a good cent on their mind.
