5 Easy Ways to Raise Instagram Engagement Rate

The importance of engagement is real on Instagram and other social media platform. Engagement means that what you've been posting has caught the attention of your audience. They shower you with likes, comments, visit your website and send you direct messages. Most of the time, I think engagement is one of the most important indicators on social media. Do you agree?

When people like what we've posted, we kind of get the gist of what's working and what's not working. People say that having engagement rate between 3.5% -6% is considered good. Engagement helps us to generate leads, which later could be translated into sales in the marketing funnel. We do whatever we can to get into that number. So what are executable ideas that we can do to reach those numbers?


Here are 10 things that you can do to raise engagement with your audience and simple psychological explanation behind it. I write it down based on my experience with some logical exposure that I have felt for the past years.

Instagram engagement rate is important, there are ways you can do to raise them. Here are my five personal favorite things


1. Ask your Audience,

Getting your opinion heard and listened means a lot. You show your audience that their existence matters and they are contributing to your company. I like it when they I'm welcomed into a new "brand" slash "family". It shows that I am reckoned, my presence is acknowledged. This is why you and me like it when we were asked, What's your plan for the weekend? Do you prefer dark or milk chocolate? Any Pokemon lovers here? 

2. Go to their account and talk with them

I love dropping some love comment at someone's post. Most of my friend that has good engagement rate, tends to be cheerful and commented a lot on other people's page. If you can apply this gesture to your business, your audience's perception toward you will be brighter ! Leave a comment telling your honest opinion about their post, you can look for the best post and tell why you like it. Appreciation gives people psychological needs which is always welcomed. When i get told that a picture of me in front of  Mount Fuji at Kawaguchiko was beautiful, it highlighted my day. You know, when you're on holiday you posted pictures on Instagram to get likes and comment. Giving them one or two won't hurt you.


3. Reply their DMs

I have a friend with a good engagement rate and all he does is chatting with his followers on his spare time. The result? His endorsement rate delivers good result compared to people with the same number of followers. He is like the magnet that attracts people to gather easily. Why? Because when they were conversing, trust is built and by the time he wants to take down certain inactive user that take the account name on Instagram,he got it by using his audience's power. Moral wise, when someone asked you a question, you answer it right?

4.Use your social media feature

Instagram enables you to create poll, doing a QnA, poll features and many other creative way. These features are there for a purpose. Remember, the function of social media is to communicate your value and message to your audience. So if you've been using it only for posting shop catalog it's not wrong, but there's more to it. You will enjoy it as much as I do, and maintaining social media will be much more fun.

5. Use tactics

Look, we don't knock on someone's door and sell product. that's hundreds of years ago. People grow up listening to story, that is why delivering a value or message is way better through stories. That is one of the purpose of "story" feature. don't just tell them to buy your product on insta story, but build the tension through several stories. For Example:

  • Slide 1: Share the pain point, a problem that annoys people a lot
  • Slide 2: Ask for opinion from your audience, leverage the pain
  • Slide 3: Tell them your USP, why you have the power to solve their problem
  • Slide 4: Tell them to swipe up ( if you already have more than 10k followers), or to visit your profile, anything that make them act


This way is better and smoother. You're building interactions and engage with them in a well executed tactic. Do that twice a week and see the difference of your performance. I have been doing it for several accounts, the result is beyond my expectations.
